Every year, thousands of teenagers (and their parents!) face the same question:
How do we turn good school grades into a real UK university offer?

For LEO School families, the answer is: step-by-step support, from choosing A-Level subjects to pressing “submit” on UCAS – and beyond.
Below is a practical guide to the UK application process and how LEO School helps both British and international students navigate it with confidence.
Why planning early matters for UK university admission
For most courses, UCAS applications for 2026 entry must reach UCAS by 14 January 2026 at 18:00 UK time to receive equal consideration from universities. UCAS+1
There is an earlier deadline, 15 October 2025, for Oxford, Cambridge, Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine. UCAS+1
Applications sent after these dates can still be accepted, but universities are not obliged to give them the same priority. That’s why we encourage LEO students to treat these dates as non-negotiable.
2026 UCAS timeline at a glance
(Always check the UCAS website for the latest updates – dates can change.) UCAS+1
May 2025 – 2026 courses appear in UCAS search; students can start their applications.
2 September 2025 – Completed undergraduate applications can be submitted.
15 October 2025 (18:00 UK) – Deadline for Oxford, Cambridge, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary.
14 January 2026 (18:00 UK) – Main equal consideration deadline for most undergraduate courses.
26 February 2026 – UCAS Extra opens for students with no offers.
30 June 2026 (18:00 UK) – Last date to apply before applications automatically go into Clearing.
2 July 2026 – Clearing opens and vacancies are listed.
24 September 2026 (18:00 UK) – Final deadline for 2026 entry applications.
LEO teachers and our university support team build student plans backwards from these dates so nothing is left to the last minute.
Step-by-step UCAS checklist for LEO students
1. Build your course shortlist
Research subjects and universities using UCAS and university websites. UCAS
Check required A-Level subjects and typical offers.
Look at course content, not just university rankings.
How LEO helps:
Subject teachers and our university counsellor advise on realistic and aspirational choices.
We align IGCSE and A-Level choices with future plans (e.g. Medicine, Engineering, Law).
2. Create and complete your UCAS Hub
Set up your UCAS Hub account. UCAS
Gather everything in advance:
Personal details and education history
A-Level/IGCSE subjects and predicted grades
Work experience or activities
Test results (e.g. IELTS, admissions tests) if needed
How LEO helps:
We provide official predicted grades and confirm your qualifications.
We double-check entries so your application looks professional and accurate.
3. The new UCAS personal statement questions
From 2026 entry, UCAS is replacing the single long personal statement essay with a set of structured questions focusing on: motivation for the subject, preparation (study and wider reading), experiences, and preparedness for university. UCAS
This is good news for many students – it’s clearer, more focused and easier to plan.
How LEO helps:
We run workshops on how to answer each question with specific, concrete examples.
Students receive detailed feedback on drafts from teachers who know their strengths.
We help students show academic curiosity (super-curricular reading, competitions, projects) rather than just listing hobbies.
4. School reference and predicted grades
Universities rely heavily on the school reference and predicted grades when deciding whether to make an offer. University College London
At LEO School:
References are written by staff who actually teach your child in small classes, not by someone who barely knows them.
We highlight:
Academic strengths and subject progress
Independence and engagement in online learning
Achievements beyond lessons (competitions, projects, leadership)
5. Submit, track and respond
Once your UCAS form is complete, it is submitted through LEO School to UCAS.
Universities will send one of three decisions: Offer, Unsuccessful, or Interview/Assessment invitation.
You then reply by UCAS deadlines (Firm, Insurance, Decline). UCAS+1
How LEO helps:
We check every application before it is submitted.
We prepare students for:
Interviews (e.g. Oxbridge, Medicine, competitive courses)
Admissions tests (where required)
We guide families through decision-making: Firm and Insurance choices, accommodation, results day and Clearing if needed.
How LEO School supports both British and international students
LEO School is a Cambridge-accredited online British school, offering IGCSE, A-Level and A-Level Foundation pathways. Our students include:
British students living in the UK who prefer online, small-class education.
British families abroad who want to stay within the UK system.
International students aiming for UK or global universities.
Our support includes:
Academic planning from Year 9/10 onward: choosing the right subjects for future goals.
Dedicated UCAS guidance: timelines, course research, and application strategy.
Specialist mentoring for competitive routes (Oxbridge, Medicine, Law, Economics, STEM).
Reference and documentation support: predicted grades, academic reports, and exam entries.
Because our classes are small, teachers can comment on each student’s critical thinking, independence and engagement – exactly what admissions tutors want to see.
Student finance and eligibility – the basics
Student finance rules (tuition fees and maintenance loans) depend on fee status (Home/International), residence history and the nation within the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland). BHE UNI
We always advise families to:
LEO’s counsellor can point you to reliable resources and help you compare options, but final eligibility decisions are made by Student Finance and the universities themselves.
When should LEO students start preparing?
Year 9–10 (KS3 / start of IGCSE):
Explore interests, try different subjects, build good study habits.
Start light “super-curricular” activities: reading, online lectures, taster courses.
Year 10–11 (IGCSE):
Choose A-Level subjects strategically.
Begin tracking activities that show subject passion (projects, competitions, clubs).
Year 12 (AS year):
This is the core UCAS year.
Build a course shortlist, draft personal statement answers, attend open days (virtual or in-person).
Sit admissions tests where required.
Year 13:
Finalise and submit UCAS, prepare for interviews, focus on achieving target grades.
At every stage, LEO’s role is to keep students organised, realistic and ambitious.
