Best universities in the world in 2024: 4 of the top 10 are in the UK

A famous British company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) specialising in the analysis of higher education institutions around the world has published its annual World University Rankings for 2024.

The ranking is considered as one of the most widely read university rankings in the world and is based on the analysis of 17.5 million academic papers and the expert opinions of over 240,000 academic faculty and employers from across the globe.

This year, three additional metrics were introduced for the first time (sustainability, employability and international research collaboration) that, according to QS, better reflect "the changing priorities of students and the evolving missions of world-class higher education institutions today."

Other core metrics include academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, citations per faculty, international-faculty ratio, and international students ratio.

As usual, British universities are well-represented in the rankings with perfect or nearly perfect scores in categories such as academic reputation, employer reputation, employment outcomes, and faculty/student ratio.

For example, the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge (collectively known as "Oxbridge") have a perfect score (100) when it comes to almost all categories.

Here are the top 10 British universities in the world according to the ranking:

University of Cambridge (second worldwide)

University of Oxford (third worldwide)

Imperial College London (6th in the world)

University College London (UCL) (9th in the world)

University of Edinburgh (22nd in the world)

University of Manchester (32nd in the world)

King's College London (40th in the world)

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) (45th in the world)

University of Bristol (55th in the world)

The University of Warwick (67th in the world)
