Smiling woman in soft focus with text: Supported Distance Study Programme and British Online Education for Independent Learners

Not every family can fit a fixed school timetable. Students who travel, train, compete or move countries often still want a real British qualification, and they need a way to study that moves with them.

Supported Distance Study (SDS) is LEO School's flexible British curriculum for independent learners. Students follow recorded lessons, complete assignments, receive feedback and work at a pace that suits them, from KS3 through to Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level.

What Is Supported Distance Study?

SDS is a self-paced route through the British curriculum. It is important to be clear about what it is not: it is not a programme of daily live lessons. Instead, students learn from recorded lessons and digital materials, and the structure comes from assignments, feedback and progress tracking.

That makes it a strong fit for motivated, organised students who can manage their own time, and for families who value flexibility above a fixed daily schedule.

Who Is Supported Distance Study For?

Supported Distance Study works particularly well for:

  • Frequent travellers whose location changes through the year

  • Young athletes and performers with training and competition schedules

  • Families relocating between countries

  • Self-motivated students who prefer to learn independently

What Is Included in Supported Distance Study?

Each programme gives students the tools to learn independently, with academic support built in.

Recorded Lessons and Digital Materials

Students work through recorded lessons and digital resources whenever it suits them, pausing and revisiting topics as often as they need.

Assignments and Written Feedback

Assignments are marked, and students receive written feedback so they know what they are doing well and where to improve.

Internal Assessments and Progress Tracking

Internal assessments and progress tracking help students and parents see how learning is developing over time.

Limited Teacher Support

Teacher support is available, but it is limited. SDS is designed for learners who can work independently rather than those who need constant guidance.

Exam Preparation

Students receive exam guidance and, where available, mock exam materials to prepare for their Cambridge examinations.

Fees are fixed and published up front, so families know exactly what to expect.

How to Apply for Supported Distance Study

Applying takes three simple steps:

  1. Complete the SDS application form.

  2. Take the English test, if English is not the student's first language.

  3. Send the student's most recent school report or transcript.

Our Admissions Team then reviews whether the student is ready for independent study. If it would help, we may recommend an ESL course first, so that the student starts with the language skills they need to succeed. Read more about admissions at LEO School.
